we are akin

Hello!  My name is Griffin and I’ve recently joined my wife Stephanie in running our full service interior design business Akin Design Studio!  Just a little tid bit about the two of us... We met sophomore year in college in our architectural drafting class.  We didn’t sit by each other but definitely noticed each other on the first day. She was a beautiful blonde, and well, I was one of two boys in the class.  We quickly became friends! The summer after our sophomore year we traveled to various countries in Europe together on an Architecture and Design study abroad course, and the following summer followed each other to West Hollywood to intern for two prestigious interior design firms.  Our senior year, we made the best decisions of our lives and were married!  We’ve been designing side by side ever since!

Why Akin you ask?  Well the word Akin felt right for various reasons.  Akin means  “alike, or of similar character”.  We are akin to each other, we are family, and our design styles are akin to one another's.  We’re both crazy about interesting textures, unique furnishings, and the most simple, yet complex design details.  We also strive to find and work with those who are akin to us.  Those who would love a beautifully detailed interior, customized to their unique desires and liking; a space that is clean, comfortable, inviting, and edited of anything unnecessary in your life.  We agree with the prominent English designer William Morris when he said, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”   That’s real folks.

Here at Akin, Stephanie and I specialize in a style that is contemporary and eclectic, with a touch of funk.  Clean muted color palettes wash the walls and surfaces of the homes we design, leaving the perfect backdrop for your favorite sofa, heirloom rug, or cherished piece of art.

We both love to create whether it’s beautiful interiors, art (Stephanie studied art throughout her schooling and is an exceptional artist!), or even occasionally building custom furniture pieces, like this crib here (usually I leave that work to the legitimate artisans, it turns out they do a much better job).  We believe creating is God given, and that everyone has the innate power and potential to create something beautiful. So, get out there a develop your talents, yo!

Stephanie and I have always dreamed of owning our own design business together.  We’re passionate about design and the effect that it has on our daily lives.  We’re excited about the opportunity to be in business together and hope to create something that can really make a difference in the lives of our clients.  We hope you’ll join us on our journey, and we appreciate each and every one of you that follows along!
